Dr. Mia Hyde brings extensive experience in education and leadership to CER, with a career dedicated to improving student achievement and supporting educators.
Dr. Hyde began her career as an elementary teacher after earning her B.A. from Emory & Henry College. She went on to earn an M.A. in Reading from Rider University, which led to over 15 years as a reading specialist in school districts across the First Tennessee region. In 2006, she became the district reading specialist for Greeneville City Schools, where she focused on district-wide reading instruction and interventions.
From 2013 to 2020, Dr. Hyde served with the Tennessee Department of Education as the coordinator of reading content and resources and later as a regional director. In 2020, she earned her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from East Tennessee State University, further strengthening her expertise in education and leadership.
Dr. Sherry Cockerham has served as a district math curriculum coach and high school math teacher for Johnson City Schools, retiring with over 30 years of teaching and coaching experience in both urban and rural settings at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels in Tennessee and Kentucky. She was named Johnson City Schools’ Teacher of the Year in 2007.
Engaged at the state level as an Instructional Coach, she held positions on numerous committees with the Tennessee Department of Education. She earned her B.S. in mathematics from Eastern Kentucky University, M.S. in mathematics from East Tennessee State University, Ed.S. from Lincoln Memorial University, and her Ed.D. from the University of the Cumberlands, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
Pennye Thurmond brings experience from a 25-year career in the field of education. Her journey began as a middle school teacher, where she learned to inspire and engage at-risk students. This knowledge served her well as she transitioned to roles as an Assistant Principal and Principal, leading a turnaround school.
For the past 11 years, Pennye has served at the Tennessee Department of Education. As the Director of Administrator Evaluations, she ensured high standards for educational leadership. Later, as the Director of the Center of Regional Excellence, she provided support to 48 superintendents and supervisors, promoting educational excellence across the region.
In July 2024, Pennye retired to embark on an exciting new chapter in leadership development through her consulting business, LEAD With Purpose, LLC. Through this endeavor, she continues to empower and inspire the next generation of educational leaders.
